Engineering drawing, blueprint and large-format scanning

Engineering drawing scanning captures A0, A1 and non-standard large-format sheets that cannot go through an office scanner. Sound sheets run on wide-format roll equipment; damaged, taped or brittle originals are captured on a flatbed. Because nobody searches drawings by full text, the deliverable that matters is an indexed register built from the title block on each sheet.

Engineering drawing scanning in Dubai is mostly a question of what is actually in the drawing store, because it is rarely one clean set of A1 prints. A typical construction or facilities archive holds ammonia dyeline prints that have gone brown, linen and sepia originals from the earliest phases, A0 sheets folded and refolded until the creases have split, and a run of recent plots that are simply large. Each of those wants different handling, and treating them as one job is how detail gets lost.

Sizes and materials

  • A0, A1 and A2 sheets, plus non-standard widths and roll drawings longer than any standard size.
  • Dyeline and blueprint prints, where the background has darkened over the years and the line work has faded toward it from the other direction.
  • Linen, vellum and sepia originals, which are dimensionally sensitive and should not be pulled through a tight roller path.
  • Folded sheets with split creases, tape repairs, missing corners and drawing-pin holes at each edge.
  • Coloured as-built markups, redline revisions and highlighter that carries meaning nobody wrote down elsewhere.

Roll-fed or flatbed

Two capture routes, and the choice is made sheet by sheet rather than for the whole roll. Wide-format roll equipment handles drawings in sound condition at a good rate, which covers the bulk of most modern sets. Flatbed capture handles anything taped, torn, brittle, mounted or dimensionally sensitive. The rule is unglamorous: if a sheet would be at risk in a roller path, it goes on glass and the slower rate is accepted. Sorting the store into those two streams during the survey is what keeps the project both safe and affordable.

Getting the image right

  • Capture in greyscale or colour where line work is faint. Thresholding a faded dyeline straight to black and white is the quickest way to lose a dimension line permanently.
  • Background suppression tuned per drawing type, not one setting applied across the whole store, because a browned dyeline and a fresh plot need opposite treatment.
  • Resolution driven by the finest detail on the sheet. Hatching, small annotation text and dimension strings decide it, not the sheet size.
  • Colour retained wherever markups carry meaning. A red as-built annotation that comes back grey has lost the one property that distinguished it from the original design intent.
  • Scale reference preserved, so the scanned sheet can be checked against a known dimension and printed back to size.

The register is the real deliverable

For drawings, indexing matters more than for almost any other record type, because nobody searches a drawing archive by full text. People search by drawing number, revision, discipline, project and sheet title. All of that sits in the title block on each sheet, and capturing it accurately into a drawing register is the difference between a searchable archive and a folder of very large images that only the person who scanned them can navigate. Fields normally captured:

  • Project number and project name
  • Drawing number and sheet number within the set
  • Sheet title and discipline
  • Revision and revision date
  • Scale and sheet size
  • Status: issued for construction, as-built, superseded, for information
  • Originating consultant or contractor

Scanning produces an image, not CAD geometry

A scanned drawing is a raster image. It can be viewed, printed to scale, issued, stored in a document system and used as an underlay beneath new work in CAD. It is not editable geometry, and no scanner anywhere produces editable geometry. Converting a raster drawing into CAD entities is a separate exercise with its own scope, cost and quality decisions about how faithfully the original is reproduced and what is silently corrected along the way. If your project needs that, raise it at the assessment rather than assuming it falls out of the scanning.

Where the drawings usually turn up

Contractor and consultant drawing stores at project handover, when a set has to be issued to the client in a usable form. Facilities teams inheriting an as-built set with a building and discovering it is three cardboard tubes. Government and utility asset archives holding network drawings older than the systems that map them now. Manufacturing plants with equipment drawings that predate the current production line and exist nowhere else. Drawings can be captured at your site where the store cannot be moved, though wide-format equipment and the space it needs make that more constrained than ordinary on-site scanning.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes of drawing can you scan?

A0, A1 and A2 as standard, plus non-standard widths and long roll drawings that exceed any standard sheet size. Sheets are captured at full size rather than in sections wherever the equipment allows, since stitched captures introduce alignment error exactly where someone will later take a measurement.

Can faded blueprints and dyeline prints be recovered?

Legibility can usually be improved a great deal by capturing in greyscale or colour and suppressing the darkened background, rather than forcing the sheet to black and white. What cannot be done is inventing information that has already faded off the paper. Where a line is genuinely gone, the honest deliverable is a good image of a damaged drawing.

Will scanned drawings be converted into AutoCAD files?

Not by scanning. A scan produces a raster image that can be printed to scale, stored, issued and used as a CAD underlay, but it is not editable geometry. Raster-to-vector conversion is a separate exercise with its own scope and quality decisions. Raise it during the assessment if you need it, rather than expecting it as an output of capture.

Are folded and damaged drawings a problem?

They change the capture route rather than blocking it. Anything taped, torn along the creases, brittle or mounted goes to flatbed capture instead of a roller path, at a slower rate. Sheets are opened carefully and captured with the fold lines visible rather than being forced flat, which is how long-folded drawings split down the middle.

How are drawings indexed if OCR cannot read a drawing?

From the title block. Drawing number, sheet title, discipline, revision, revision date, scale, status and originating consultant are captured into a drawing register, and that register is what people search. Full-text OCR across a drawing has little value, because nobody looks for a sheet by the words written on it.

What resolution should drawings be scanned at?

High enough to resolve the finest detail on the sheet, which usually means the hatching, dimension strings and small annotation text rather than the sheet size. That is settled on a sample rather than assumed. Capturing higher than the drawing supports adds file size and storage cost without adding information.

Can drawings be scanned at our site?

Yes, though it is more constrained than ordinary on-site scanning. Wide-format equipment needs floor space, a table run for handling large sheets and a route to get tubes and folders into the room. Where the store cannot be moved, it is workable. Where it can, a facility with both roll and flatbed equipment handles a mixed-condition set far better.
